Everyday Comforts Can Prevent Us From Truly Living

Untitled
Tonight’s our last night camping, we’ve been at the beautiful Sebago Lake area of Maine.  It’s the longest we’ve been away from home at one time, which has been such an interesting experience.  The convenience & comfort of our home has been replaced with simplicity & simple living.  To be completely honest before we left I was a little worried about the 6 of us leaving all our comforts behind for a small popup tent trailer 3 hrs away for 8 days.  It sounded like a lot to give up, even if you are living a simple life.  Of course my concerns weren’t warranted, since it’s been a great adventure, one that we’ve really needed.
We’ve literally cut out everything except for food, shelter (our popup tent trailer which has 2 bunks, a pull out couch, toilet, sink, cabinet, & fridge), clothing, free to cheap activities (outdoors & through the campground only, nothing elsewhere), & we limited technology & communication usage.  The only things we really missed was our reptiles, my gardens, & a few people important to us.  Everything that was cut, didn’t make any difference in our lives this week.
We need very little in our lives to truly thrive, yet we surround ourselves with excess of everything.  We end up creating a bubble of distractions around us that hinders our lives, without realizing it.  We get so caught up in the rat race, wondering why we are so miserable and unhappy, even though we have all these comforts around us.
When did our everyday comforts turn into distractions, preventing us from fully experiencing life?

Healthy Living Link Up #17

The 1st week of summer vacation is going well as we are heading out for our 1st vacation, a week away at my happy spot. I love being able to get out, traveling, meeting new people, & exploring new places. How’s your summer vacation going so far?
This week I loved the featured post on the importance of buying locally, which helps the economy & your health. A fun part of traveling is shopping locally, especially since Maine has some great farm stands & markets.  There’s this awesome stand right down the street, which I intend to use as much as possible.  Check out this and our other featured posts from last week.
Welcome to the Healthy Living Link Party #17. We’d like to thank each and every one of you for making every week so amazing! Keep sharing your healthy posts with us.

Welcome to the Healthy Living Link Party The Healthy Living link party is all about living a healthy life. Link up your  posts related to healthy living and recipes that are low carb, low calorie, paleo, keto, organic, clean, etc. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring and is more fun when you share your recipes and find some new ones.

Buying Local - Why It's ImportantElaine, Heather and Sarah chose Buying Locally: Why It’s Important from The Sommelier Chef

Heather – “I agree that it is so important to buy local when possible – especially when it comes to produce. It tastes better, keep more of its nutrients and supports the local economy.”

Sarah – “I feel just as strongly about the importance of eating locally as much as you can to help our local economy & producers as well as the health benefits such as more nutrients & promotes safer food supply”

Broccoli TotsAnn chose Broccoli Tots from Peaches + Salt

” I love broccoli and am looking for other ways to prepare it. These looked delicious!”

Healthy Coconut Oatmeal Haystack Cookies Karen chose Healthy Coconut Oatmeal Haystack Cookies from our own Living Intentionally Simple

“I loved this recipe because it was SO simple! My other favorite thing about it was that it’s as much a “process” as a recipe. You can come up with your own great flavors and ideas to make this truly your own. Everyone in the family can add a unique touch each time you make them. It’s a great way to spend some time in the kitchen with family. Or to just whip up something quick and healthy for the kids. I love it both ways!”

I was recently asked if I had any advice for the parents of young children in our church.  You may be surprised at what that advice was.  It had nothing to do with spending quality time with your kids, or the pros and cons of home schooling.  My advice was this; work on your marriage.

OMHG Wordless Wednesday

It’s the 1st week of summer vacation for us, school’s finally done.  What an amazing school year, this was.   A lot of things changed for us but the biggest change was having no more children at home.  This year was the 1st in 15 yrs I was home alone with no children to take care of. I began the school year worried & sad wondering what I will do with myself but ended the year with happiness because I was able to pursue things of my own desire and take care of my family & contentment at the beginning our new chapter with a great start.
Now on to the Wordless Wednesday party, which I look forwards to each week. This is a great way to get exposure to your blog and the posts you work hard on, as well as making new blogger friends and reading some great content. Something new this week is picking our favorites posts to be featured.  As you guys already know I’m a big photography fan so my features this week were two of my favorite images that were linked up.  Go check them out below as well as the other featured posts.
Come and join us with wordless or wordish posts, all is welcome. And if you are looking for a fun way for more exposure, meet new bloggers, & work with a great group of ladies, you might want to consider signing up as a co-host for July.

10 Reasons Essential Oils Are Worth Trying

_RYA0486
The big wide world of essential oils has been calling my name.  Ever since I made my bug spray, it has intrigued me, wanting more.  So I’ve reading and educating myself as much as possible, soaking everything in.
There is so much information about essential oil (EO), hundreds and hundreds of posts about the health benefits & as well as the harm it could cause you from being untrained user.
The 1st step for me is to figure out which company to buy them from.  Luckily, my hubby works at a health food store, he can bring home a few samples for me to try before taking the plunge and buying them.
There is plenty of information out there about which ones to buy but everyone says that you must use therapy grade oils when ingesting them such as Young living, DoTerra, & Simpler’s Botanicals.  Otherwise, it can be harmful to you.  If you know of other therapy grade brands, please let me know.  But if you are infusing them or using them topically, then you don’t need therapy grade, even though is it highly recommended.
As I was reading I came across a great list of reasons to try essential oils, that I just had to share.  What else could you add to this list?

10 Reasons Essential Oils Are Worth Trying
information @ Elephant Journal

1. Essential oils are anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-infectious and antiseptic. They can combat infectious disease by killing off viruses, bacteria or other pathogens. Some oils have been shown to destroy all tested viruses and bacteria.

2. Essential oils can act on both your mind and your body. Their aromas can be stimulating both psychologically and physically, as well as calming and sedating. Inhaling aromas is extremely powerful. Aromatic stimuli of your limbic system cause the release of neurotransmitters, including pain-reducing enkephalin, pleasure-producing endorphins, relaxing serotonin, and stimulating noradrenaline.

3. Essential oils are some of the most powerful known antioxidants. (Determined by an ORAC developed by Tuft University).

4. Essential oils are capable of penetrating your cell membranes since they are lipid-soluble. According to Jean V. MD, essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes, and are then metabolized like other nutrients. An antibiotic cannot penetrate your cell’s wall.

5. Essential oils detoxify your cells and your blood.

6. Essential purify the air by eliminating odors from cooking, animals, mold, bacteria and other sources.

7. Essential oils are small enough to penetrate every tissue in your skin.

8. According to researchers at Vienna University, essential oils stimulate blood flow, which increases your nutrient and oxygen delivery.

9. Essential oils can be administered in two ways, either topically or through aromatherapy and therapeutic grade essential oils can be ingested in certain instances. When applied topically and inhaled, essential oils are  absorbed immediately into your bloodstream. Oils used aromatically don’t have to go through your digestive system, so they work immediately in your body.

10. The essential oils’ versatility makes them fairly inexpensive to use. One bottle goes a long way and can be used for many different ailments. For example, lavender oil helps with relaxation, sleep, bug bites, eczema and burns.

Wow, after I read this, I had to include it as the main part of my post, since the benefits seem to be amazing.  I will def have to check this out for myself.  So if you’re looking to start trying EO, check out a few organic and/or health care store for free samples or testers.  My husband’s work offers free samples whenever they have them in, all you have to do is ask.  I’m sure there are more stores out there, that will do the same.  If you can’t find one, check out your local distributor from any of the three brands listed above.  I provided the links for you, just click on the names.  I’ve know a few people who are distributors and they offer free samples to try before investing in them since the initial cost can be expensive depending on the oils you buy.  Or attend an EO party.
**Be warned, this is the 1st in many upcoming EO posts.**

Are you an essential oil user?  Has it helped?

Giving The Gift Of Presence

_RYA0131

We live in a single family home with a cute little yard in the center of a small town in rural New Hampshire.  We have pets (a dog & our reptile farm), our needs are met, & live rather comfortably.  We consider ourselves middle class, yet the numbers say we are living closer to poverty.  But who follows the numbers right?  Anyways, we live a simple modest life when compared to those around me.
Our 5 kids are in need of nothing, yet years ago this wasn’t the case.  Before simplifying our lives, my kids were in desperate need of our attention….our presence.  Without realizing it, I used technology to replace me and my attentions.  I would spend a fortune that I didn’t have on things that took away from our time together.  This went on for a while, till I stopped and starting changing things in my life around.  This is when I realized the grave mistake I was making with my children and decided to stop this.
Instead of getting the latest and greatest best thing out there, I make it a point to spend time with my children throughout the year, during special holidays or events.  Sure they get a small toy or something but instead of doing an extravagant gift, I include as a gift, the gift of presence.  We do something together, making memories, & being present in each other’s life.  This to me is best gift one can give another.
This year, I decided since my nieces are older, it’s time to start doing this with them.  My middle niece’s birthday is this week so we made her a fun tote bag full of things she can do with us or her family, fun little toys.  We didn’t spend much but we personalized her tote and took the time to put it together with her in mind.  Then we are spending the afternoon with her swimming, giving her our undivided attention.  What she will remember isn’t the bag of toys but that we always did something special for her on her special day.  She will have the memories we created together for the rest of her life, knowing we did this because of the love we have for her.
Don’t make the same mistakes I made and let our technology filled world distract you from the important things, the important people.  Don’t let the distractions take over & lose those meaningful connections.  Giving the gift of your presence is a gift that keeps on giving, so go out there and share your gift with the world.  Share your love with your loved ones and anyone who needs it.

Have you been sharing your gift or have you let the distractions in your life get in the way?

Willingness

My Life In Progress

Every single one of us that has ever lived has harmed someone, somewhere at some point in our lives.  Either we spoke to harshly towards someone or perhaps we told a lie thinking they wouldn’t know or maybe we forgot to do something that was important to someone else.

The Pub Burger

A Sprinkle of This and That

The Pub Burger?  A simple sea salt and pepper seasoned burger topped with your lettuce and tomato.  But then there are caramelized Vidalya onions and a sauce that is so smoky good!  Unbelievable!

EASY CINNAMON STICKS RECIPE

Cincy Shopper

If you are needing a quick and easy breakfast or dessert idea, these Easy Cinnamon Sticks will be perfect. In just a few minutes time, you can be enjoying these sticks of yumminess all topped with a sweet icing.

Battling Our Fears

Grammie Time

The grandchildren and I visited the zoo. There was so much to see, explore and experience. Eli is three years old and his curiosity is in full swing. Hannah is almost two and she is fearless, exploring everything around her. So you can imagine how my senses were on full alert trying to keep them out of harm’s way and still have fun.

BANANA SPLIT FRUIT KABOBS WITH DIP

All She Cooks

Think perfect chocolate dipped strawberries.  Chocolate drizzled strawberries. It’s all about how to make a delicious dessert with a simple sauce.  Chocolate sauce mind you. There’s now way around it.  These are fun treats to make with kids.  Or without.  Just saying–I could eat these all day every day, with my kids or alone.   And not even feel guilty.

Patriotic Paper Craft

This Mama Loves

These paper crafts are perfect for your next patriotic event! Add them to food on your table. Toss them in a centerpiece or plant or enjoy them by themselves in a cute mason jar! I love using hot glue with paper because there is very little dry time.

A Bird House Wreath

The Messy Roost

When did summer get here?  I really can’t complain, living in Arizona, we haven’t had too many warm (hot) days.  I can’t say the “H” word, because, we all know how warm it really gets – ha ha.  Anyway, I have had this wreath idea in my head for at least a year, maybe two.  I really did have a different picture in my head, but, I like it.

Turtle Tote from Jeans

Creating my way to Success

This is my latest clothes upcycle for the school carnival stall later this year.

Almond Vanilla Body Butter

SITS

Body Butter is a product I use every single day, especially during winter and summer. There is nothing more amazing for your skin, than a luxurious body butter that leaves your skin looking smoother than ever. Body Butter can be very expensive, and finding a scent you want to linger on your skin all day isn’t always easy.

“CHOCOMOLE”

a.k.a the easiest raw vegan Chocolate pudding!

Becoming Alice

“Now what the heck is Chocomole?”, you might be wondering. “Is it really guacamole but with chocolate?!”

My Picnic Party on the Deck Cart

Crafts a la Mode

This little project was so much fun and I got to use one of my many pieces of junk picked up from the side of the road. SCORE!

The TRUTH Behind Perfect Facebook Posts…

~Taylor-Made Homestead~

Recently I was trying to decide what flavor endless soup I wanted to make for our weeks’ worth of bone-warming lunches during this cold weather.  I decided against the Mexican or Italian flavored that I usually go for and opted instead to make a good hearty stew-styled soup.  It was delicious, and I wanted to share with our followers.

Oven Roasted Cabbage Steaks

Made in a Day

Cabbage is one of my favorite veggies to eat. And since I am still on my low-carb diet this side dish Oven Roasted Cabbage Steaks is delicious way to to enjoy your veggies and stay on track! I usually saute cabbage chunks in a little oil with salt and pepper. Add water and steam until tender. But this oven roasted version is so much easier and tastier.

Evidence How Foods Affect Children’s Behavior

Deep Roots at Home

How foods affect children’s behavior has been heavy on my mind as I’ve watched Mamas struggle with increasingly belligerent and aggressive kids. This topic is just too important to ignore.

American Flag Pallet Project

Diva of DIY

As some of you know any project for me that involves a pallet is a favorite of mine. This American Flag Pallet Project is so easy and has become one of my favorite since last year!

Mixed Media Patriotic Art

The CSI Project

Mixed Media is fun and creative. Stretch your creative muscles and just explore what you can do. This project started out one way and by the end, it was just what I wanted.

10 Writing Tips to Improve Your Blog

Budget Girl

When I was a kid, I hated English class. Though I was good at it–it was just one of those things that came so easily. But it bored me to tears. (So it makes sense that I went on to get a BA in English, right? 😛 )

Some people have a harder time understanding English. I have a cousin who excels at math but can’t write a coherent sentence to save his life. Which is fine, because he doesn’t work in a field that requires writing skills.

Sangria Ice

Upstate Ramblings

This cool and refreshing Sangria Ice is a perfect summer treat for grown ups!

It’s Beginning To Look Like A Garden

_RYA0413

Growing up, I never had a garden or a house that had one.  I moved around so much, the last thing on anyone’s mind was gardening.  It wasn’t until till I was 32, when I got my 1st garden and that is only because it came with our home. One of the many perks was a few established gardens throughout my yard.  The time and effort the previous owners put in showed through the amazing soil I have.  Even though I had this great garden, I didn’t fully appreciate it till this year.
_RYA0417
This year, I am fully committed to getting as much use out of it as I can.  Not sure if it’s because I’m feeling better with my illness or if it’s because I’m older more mature, or because I realized if done correctly having a garden can save us a lot of money.  And everyone knows just how frugal I am.  Whatever the reason, I’ve been busy learning about gardening and putting what I’ve learned to good use.  Did you realize how much information there is regarding gardening?  I could learn 1 new thing a day and 50 years from now, still be learning new things.  It’s nuts all the information and all the different types of gardens or gardening techniques out there.  I thought it would be fun to share my garden, it’s progress, & helpful information I learned this year and do a few posts throughout the summer to see my progress & share any helpful tips or ideas I come across.
_RYA0415 _RYA0421
When we bought our house 3 years ago, the gardens it had was amazing.  I loved looking at the flowers and fantasized about growing the biggest and most colorful gardens.  One thing that wasn’t in my fantasy was the amount of work it entails to keep & maintain a garden.  I give all you gardeners credit, it’s a lot of work.  But I’ve been doing it slowly, over the course of the last month or so and I am starting to see results.  Isn’t it the best when you see the fruits of your labor?  But before we get to the images, I thought I would give you a quick breakdown of what I have to work with.

Here’s a break down of my yard & my goals:
*My land size is .68 acres of land (not a whole lot but enough for us….for now)
*I have 3 gardens so far: front, side, & back
*My ultimate gardening goal is to have a edible diverse landscape that utilizes my yard to the best of my ability.  I want to produce as much as possible throughout the year, increasing a little each year
*I plan on donating a good portion of my produce to the local homeless shelter and/or local veteran & seniors as much as I can throughout the garden season

Here are some more images from my growing gardening:
*this past week I was able to move my cucumber & watermelon plants into the garden, which was fun with the girls helping me out*

My goals for June are:
*Get free plants to plant in my garden, whenever possible (so far I’ve gotten 20ish different free plants for my garden….tomatoes, basil, thyme, tomatillos, 3 kind of squash, 2 kinds of cabbage, & 2 kinds of lettuce)
*Hollow out a few stumps in the back yard & dig up the flowers in whiskey barrel.  Plant them in the stumps
*Dig up the rhubarb & plant it in my side garden next to the grapes or next the the hostas
*Finish weed whacking the hill out back & buy some Jeeper Creeper flowers to plant around huge stump
*Pull weeds in the front where the hostas are, relocate hostas, & plant the remaining plants starting my 2nd veggie garden.  Thank goodness for having a compost ready with amazing soil.  Once plants are planted, I will be using the remaining mulch for it.
*Start weeding the front flower garden
*Buy mulch for the front flower garden & lay it down
