Today’s a special day for us, no only is it the 1st day of school but it’s also my 10 yr wedding anniversary.  To
I wanted to make sure there day started off well, so I got up early to make them breakfast.  The kids had mixed feelings about today but it’s bittersweet for me.  I’m happy to have them all start a new year but sad at how big my kids are getting.  This year I have a junior & sophomore in high school, a 7th grader, a 2nd grader, & a 1st grader.  WOW!  We are going to have such a fun year.  Has school started for you yet?

Wake Up Wednesday

What a whirlwind the last two weeks have been.  Who knew getting a job, enjoying the last bits of summer, & getting 5 kids ready for school (which is tomorrow) would make me as busy as I’ve been.  Thankfully, things will be slowing down a bit once school is underway.

Antique Record Player Cabinet Redo
Re-do It Yourself Inspirations

Phonograph. Gramophone. Record Player.
Antique piece of attitude.
Whatever it was is not anymore.
It was missing the bottom. Completely. No hinges either; so the lid was nailed into the top. Nailed. Really. You can’t see it under the onion skin layers. But I found the nails.
No key for the lock. (That would be a luxury; wouldn’t it?)
Not only was it painted this pink-red… it contained screws, nails, Christmas light bulbs and… spark plugs… along with a mini straight edge embedded in old dried up oil.
I don’t know why.

Garden in a Bowl Soup Chopped
KC the Kitchen Chopper,

Did you know that Soup Chopped are a cost chopping wonder? This Garden in a Bowl Soup Chopped is just that. I had random veggies roaming around my vegetable drawer that needed to be used. My Farm Fresh Box was coming on Friday and I still had a few carrots, a Fennel Bulb, an Onion and a Red Pepper that were crying out for a hearty and Meatless Soup. I can’t wait to see what FF sends me this week!

Fruit Flies! What Are They? How Do I Get Rid Of Them?
 Ducks ‘n a Row

Fruit Flies are small little flies that live on fruit as adult insects, their eggs and larva. Yuck!
Some time ago I told you about my battle with pantry moths.
That was a long ordeal. This fruit fly solution is so much simpler. It will make you happy!

Quebec City – La Vieille Capitale
Kiku Corner

Founded in 1608, Quebec City has a population of just over half a million and is the capital of the province of Quebec. Old Quebec, the oldest neighbourhood in Quebec City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is surrounded by ramparts. The Citadelle, the oldest military building in Canada and still used by the military, is part of the fortifications that have been designated a National Historic Site of Canada.

Easy Fondant Ghost Cupcakes
One Little Project

I love Halloween treats! I know it’s early to start talking about them, but they are so cute and so creative and just so different from what we do the rest of the year, that I just can’t help myself!

These fondant ghost cupcakes are absolutely adorable and they are SO EASY! I love a cute treat that doesn’t take a lot of effort! Make these with some chocolate covered pretzel pumpkins, some mini donut spiders and some pretzel and cheese string broomsticks and you’d have a pretty awesome spread for a Halloween party!

An organized craft supplies area
Sweet N Tidy

Our craft section in the office room was occupying an Ikea BILLY bookcase in our office room. Last year I wasn’t so excellent enough in taking photos and the DIYs were not so perfect from my point of view and now the craft area is a little empty and it has been put in hold for a while as we have a nice toddler running around and when it comes to a jewellery maker craft storage … This is absolutely dangerous for my toddler.

Updated Fall Mason Jar Vases
Anything & Everything

So there was the Hubs plopped down on the couch, one hand down his pants doing his best Al Bundy impersonation while watching preseason football, When it suddenly occurred to me “Holy crap, it’s almost Fall!”.   And as every blogger knows, you gotta stay ahead of the seasonal curve :).  Only trouble was that… well… I didn’t have any glamorous projects cooked up. With a need to start decorating the house for fall, but nothing lined up,  I decided to revisit one of my favorite projects from last year to see if I could breathe new life into it.  And While you will have to be the judge, I feel pretty darn good about the results. (pop’s collar / drop’s mic) .   All kidding aside, They’re like…. Super cute and junk!  Yay for reboot’s!  Enjoy

Craft Room Makeover Reveal!!!
Craving some creativity

Isn’t that scary?! Now this one takes a lot for me to put out on the internet, but it is absolutely real life. Messy, messy even though that room is actually clean. I just had NO WHERE to put anything. I honestly did most of my crafting on the floor and I bet some of you know how that experience. The opposite wall (not pictured) is my husband’s desk and office space to do what he wants with. Ok, moving on! Are you ready for this??

No More Missed Opportunities

“One reason people resist change is that they focus on what they have to GIVE UP, rather than what they have to GAIN!”
~Rick Godwin

Change is uncomfortable, so we tend to avoid it. I can’t count how many times in the past, I missed opportunities because I was too scared of the unknown, scared of change. I was comfortable with the way things were. Why change a good thing, right? I was happy where I was in life, like I am right now.  I’m the most comfortable I’ve been in a long time because life is good!  But with school approaching fast, things were going to change.
For about a year now, I’ve been looking for a job that fits my kid’s schooling schedule, the pays decent, that is something I would enjoy, there’s growth within the company, & it’s something I could grow in, it’s part time or seasonal (mine’s since it ends in Dec), & it’s something I would look forwards to not dreading each day I’ve gotta work. This is a tall order to fill and has taken a long time but in July I finally found the job that I’ve been searching for. And when I actually got hired, I can’t tell you how excited I was. Then the excitement faded and my nerves took over. I began thinking about how many things that will change for us. Once that happened, it’s hard not to let your nervousness completely take over. I let it get the best of me, especially the night before training, where I ended up in the bathroom throwing up 3 times.

ONLY as high as I reach can i GROW, only as far as I SEEK can I go, only as deep as I LOOK can I SEE, only as much as I DREAM can I BE.”
~Karen Raun

This week I started 5 days of training, which is 1.5 hrs away from home. I actually enjoy the ride, just not how early it is. I’m lucky enough to have great people around me who have helped with watching my little ones.  Not worrying about the girls, has decreased my stress level a ton, letting me concentrate on my training.
Training has gone well and I’ve really enjoy it so far.  I’ve learned a ton as well as getting used to working with adults instead of small children.  I’m confident that when I’m on my own next week, I’ll do just fine, since I feel this job was meant for me.
This opportunity, is one that I’m happy to say I didn’t miss out on. When we live in our comfort zone too long, we tend to forget that change is necessary for our growth.  Life is all about change and how we adapt to it. Don’t miss an opportunity because you let your discomforts, fears, & anxiety get the better of you.  Push them aside and embrace whatever the opportunity presents you.
How about you? Have you missed an opportunities because of you feared change?

CARAMEL APPLE POKE CAKE
Cincy Shopper

Poke cakes make for a super easy and delish dessert. We normally make poke cakes in the summer, our Boston Cream Poke Cake has been a huge hit. Since I had a few cake mixes and apple pie filling on hand, a poke cake was in order. I spotted some easy Pillsbury Caramel frosting at Target while school shopping last week. I knew it would make for a perfect frosting on top of this apple yumminess.

Jack-O-Lantern Orange Fruit Cups
Simplee Thrifty

Halloween is such a fun holiday; I love coming up with all sorts of fun and cute crafts and projects that I can do with or for my kids. And from making milk jug jack-o-lanterns to scattering plastic spiders around to baking Halloween-themed treats, there are plenty of ideas to choose from. I’m pretty sure I could do new cute projects every year and never run out of ideas! This Halloween, I’m making these adorable Jack-O-Lantern Orange Fruit Cups.

How Much Salad Should You Eat To Lose Weight?
Urban Naturale

My friends and family often make comments about how large my salads are.
I just smile and say “Salads are good for you” and keep on chewing!
Flavorful, crunchy, multi-textured salads are probably my favorite food.
I eat them every day.

TOMATO, LEEK, AND GOAT CHEESE TART
MY FLAGSTAFF HOME

This delicious recipe is adapted from one in a Martha Stewart magazine (no longer in publication) called Everyday Food.

DIY Succulent Planters
My Big Fat Happy Life

I have been wanting to place a plant in my kitchen windowsill for awhile but needed something that was strong enough to withstand my not so green green-thumb.  I decided to use succulents if I can keep them alive outside I should be able to keep them alive inside, right?

Prickly Pear Jelly
Hill House Homestead

Prickly Pear tunas are turning ripe this time of year. Tuna are the fruit of the prickly pear cacti that ripen after it flowers. Prickly Pear Jelly has a unique flavor I wouldn’t begin to know how to describe, but it’s good. My neighbor has a nice crop of tunas this year and I decided to try my hand at making jelly. I searched the web for recipes and tips then got started.

The Multiple Uses Of Huggies Wipes – They Aren’t Just For Babies, You Know!
Ducks ‘n a Row

Moms, how many times have you re-purposed something? All of us do. We are constantly reinventing things to make them work for our homes. Well, Huggies Wipes at Walmart are new and improved with TripleClean™ technology that no others have. They are now thicker, too, which makes them SUPER repurposable. (Is that a word?)  So, anytime can be a good time for wipe BECAUSE KIDS OUTGROW DIAPERS, NOT MESSES.*

Easy Lemon Cupcake Recipe
You Brew My Tea

I love dessert and this Easy Lemon Cupcake Recipe is a perfect way to enjoy a sweet treat that is bright, light and delightful!  For me, lemon cake or cupcakes always remind me of my grandpa. He loved a lemon bundt cake, and in his last year of life I often made them for him since he had little appetite for any regular food.  My friend Amber made these light and delicious cupcakes for me and I knew I had to share them with you.

A Different Kind of Coconut Oil
Storybook  Apothecary

Cocovit Coconut Oil is not your average run-of-the-mill coconut oil. Created as a way to help anyone who wants an all-in-one beauty and health solution to their problems, Cocovit is the most raw and pure coconut oil you’ll find anywhere. Cocovit owns the coconut farm in South India where they employ 30+ locals to help harvest the organic coconuts. All coconuts are fresh, hand-picked, and a special extraction process is then employed. The extraction process does not use heat, bleaches, solvents or deodorizers like many common coconut oils might employ. Instead, their extraction method allows the coconut oil to retain it’s raw freshness state and doesn’t destroy any of the valuable enzymes and nutrients which make coconut oil so beneficial for us in the first place. It also helps retain a higher concentration of lauric acid, a naturally occurring ingredient which does wonders for hair, skin and nails.

Breakfast B.L.T.
Life With Lorelai

Doesn’t that look DELICIOUS? You have no idea how good it was with our homegrown tomatoes! This sandwich came about as a mash-up of mine and Luke’s ideas for Sunday breakfast. I had a can of Trader Joe’s Buttermilk Biscuits (which I love) that I had planned on fixing with some eggs and such. But, we had so many tomatoes from the garden that Luke thought maybe it would be nice to have a BLT for breakfast…it was after 10:30…

Our goat saga
Homesteading Quest

Not really a Saga I suppose. But a somewhat sad story, with an ending that could have turned out much worse.

We have 4 goats. Three Nigerian Dwarves and 1 Spanish Boer. The Boer is a show goat my daughter *was* going to show at this year’s fair.

Budget Friendly Needful Back To School Shopping

Back to school shopping isn’t very big in our house.  We don’t buy the kids new wardrobes, a bunch of school supplies, & haircuts unless needed.  This year we budgeted $100/ older kids ($300 total) & $25/ little one ($50 total) for little ones.  To some this may seem like a lot, but to others this a small budget, but for us this is just right.
Staying within our budget is a must, since there isn’t any extra money.   What helps keep me in budget is instead of buying by what the kids or I want, we buy by what we need.  It’s a simple concept but the follow through is what gets you.  It’s something that took me a long time to understand, grasp, & commit too. 77
Yesterday, I took the  girls (my 1st & 2nd grader plus my Sophomore) shopping, which ended up being lots of fun.  Our day started out by taking advantage of a favorite local business of ours celebrating their 23rd anniversary and offering a bunch of free services like eyebrow waxing.  What teen girl would pass up a free eyebrow waxing?  I took my oldest daughter and we had some mom & me time doing our eyebrows together for free.  That was a savings of $40.00 ($30 for 2 waxings plus $5 tip x2).  What an exciting way to start our day, saving money, bonding, & having a little fun together.
At Goodwill, we found some pretty good deals as well as a they special  sale going on where you get $5 off a $25 purchase.  I got two brand new backpack for cheaper than I would be able to get one everywhere else, only $7 ea.  Originally, my girls wanted character backpacks, but I explained to them how much more it would cost us for that and we wouldn’t have been able to get a new 1st day outfit for them, but left the choice up to them.  They thought about it and decided on going with the cheaper backpack because they wanted a new 1st day outfit.  So I saved $31.00.  My oldest got two nice pieces of clothing for $3 ea, one being brand new.
Next, we stopped at a consignment store that was a bust since it was super expensive.  They had backpacks for $40!  It’s insane how much money people spend for back to school stuff.  Our last stop was Target, which I did extremely well.
At Target I made a plan to only buy what we need in order for the kids have a great 1st week, which helped me get the spend less.  Before shopping, I knew what all 5 kids needed for them to start school.  I went through their clothing & supplies making sure to not buy anything that wasn’t needed.  Being organized is a big key in saving money.  I’m not very organized person overall but I am when it comes to being frugal.
In each dept, I made sure to hit up the clearance section 1st, which helped me score some great deals like 2 cute colorful matching dresses for $20 with cute sneakers for $7.00.  It’s a tradition that my girls get matching outfits for 1st day of school & holidays.  It’s more for me but while they still like doing it, I’ll continue on with our tradition.  After all our shopping, I can happily report that I was under budget by $2.77 which of course made me smile.  My frugality sure paid off.   Not only did we save a lot of money, but I got to have a fun day with the girls, sharing my frugalness with them.

This type of shopping may not appeal to a lot of you out there, but for us it’s the only way to shop.  Why buy a new lunch box when you have a good one from last year that works and does it job?  Why buy unnecessary clothing that’ll take up space, when you already have more than enough at home?  Think about it, it’s such a waste of money buying things we already have just because it’s from last year or doesn’t look as new as it once did.  Instead save your money and put it towards something you need or something that’s important to you.  Try washing something that is a bit dirty, use heavy duty stain removers if needed.  Or try adding some new bling to your last year items, making it new again.  Or throw a few stickers of their favorite characters on something, making it fun again.  My kids have everything they needed to make the 1st day/week enjoyable, fun, & successful.  Isn’t that what back to school shopping is about?
What is the best back to school deal you scored?  Got any tips on how to keep your back to school shopping budget friendly?

9 Tips To Help You Capture Amazing Vacation Photos

_RYA0260
Our vacation was great!  We explored Sebago Lake area, Naples, Boothbay & Bristol Maine.  The weather was great except for a late evening shower here and there, but who can complain about that.  11 days of exploring, camping, fun in the sun, & relaxing.
We are back home now, just in time to enjoy the last bits of summer before school starts at the end of the month…….15 days and counting.  The older I get, the quicker time moves, which of course is the opposite of what I want.  Isn’t it funny how that works?
Anyways, I had plenty of time to think about what I wanted to share here and I’ve got a great list of topics coming up.   The 1st thing I thought I would share is the different ideas that help me capture amazing vacation photos.
Now, I know some of you guys are already back to school, but for some of us, we are hanging on to the last bits of summer, with some vacations planned.  So I figured it’s a great time post.
I also needed to say that I am in way a professional, I’m what you call a hobbyist.  But I do have ideas always bouncing around in my head, that I’d be more than happy to share.  No ideas, just go looking around the internet, there’s plenty of inspiration out there.  Side note- I won’t be sharing how I edit my images, but if you are interested in knowing, please leave me a comment and I will respond to you through the comments.  If there’s interest in my editing, I would e more than happy to write post and share the different ways I edit my images using a few free or cheap editing programs.
Now with all that being said, are you ready to step up your game a little, showing off the fun times you had during vacation?  Here are my 9 tips to help you capture amazing vacation photos.

Every tip works with whatever camera you use, you don’t need an expensive one to have amazing photos.  I personally use an older Nikon D200 for all my images.  Nothing fancy or expensive.  But it does the job and then some.  Remember photography is an art, which means it’s subjective & depends upon you & how you see the world around you.
As you are thinking about my tips, go out and start snapping away.  The more you use your camera, the more comfortable you’ll be, & the more creative you’ll become.  So, go out on a photo walk, see what you can see & capture.

Got any other helpful tip for you could share with us?  Or do you have a photo you would love to share?  I would love to see your vacation or any other photo that’s yours, that you find inspirational and amazing. 🙂
