Weight Loss Motivation

“Every accomplishment starts with our decision to try.”
Developing healthier habits is the key to weight stability.  You can lose all the weight you want, but if you don’t know or have the will to maintain what you lost, it will come right back, usually adding than you lost.  This is the on-going weight loss cycle many of us go through.
I’ve been complaining I needed to lose weight for numerous reason.  But because of my past history with my illness, which you can read here, it’s been difficult.  I would diet for a bit and exercise when I could and then I would slowly slip back into old habits.  Sometimes it would be the pain that made me regress or the lack of will.  Whatever the reason, this year I made a promise to myself to be different.  I knew that in order to lose weight I had to stop looking solely at the numbers and look into developing healthy habits.
On Monday, I joined 1200 others in Skinny Mom’s 21 day shred.  I joined up knowing that I wouldn’t be able to follow it exactly.  But I knew this was a starting point for me, kick starting my way into healthier habits.
Over the course of this week, I accidentally found that by combining a hobby of mine with exercising & dieting it has encouraged & motivated me more, which in turn will help me to develop these into every day habits.
Use today for an example:
Each time I go walking, I take images of what I come across, if something strikes my fancy.  Just this morning I was walking with Rosco and found some neat looking ice.  Since I’m doing a personal 365 photography project “Beautiful Journey” where I take a photo a day of a small beautiful or special moment in my day.
The image above will remind me how I haven’t given up and how I’m making weight loss fun.  It doesn’t have to be something  stressful, something to dread.  Making it enjoyable, something you look forwards too will only encourage you to keep on going.
I love how I can combine something I’m passionate about, something I love doing with something I’m trying to change all while developing healthier habits.

What have you discovered that has helped you develop healthier habits?  Are you on a weight loss journey too?  If so, what has helped you stayed motivated?

Lose Weight By Playing With Your Children

**This post is part of my series “TWLD”  which is meant to be posted tomorrow but we are spending our day at the ocean so it’s a little early.**  To catch up with this series click here to read all the previous posts.

There are numerous ways to add in exercise & lose during the warmer months.  It just depends on what your goals are.  For me, I don’t like exercise if it’s a routine.  Blame my adhd on this one.  I like to mix things up a bit and can’t commit to doing the same home exercises each day.  That’s just super boring to me.  But if you can, that’s great!  It just isn’t in my DNA.

I love biking, rollerblading, hiking, swimming, & walking.  But my most favorite way to exercise is by playing with my children.  Running around with them playing tag or playing hopscotch or going for a hike exploring a new area are just a few ways I can enjoy my time with the kids as well as get some exercise in, which in turn helps me lose weight.
The sheer energy children have is amazing and if I can keep up with them there’s no doubt the weight will be melting off me.  Each day I make it a point to engage with my children, being active as much as I can, all the while enjoy their company.  They don’t see it as exercising but as quality time together in which they have my undivided attention.  Plus, I want my children to grow up being active, so when they are adults, they don’t stop being active.  That was the biggest mistake for me, once I hit a certain age, I stopped being active.  I thought being thin meant your healthy, so I never exercised.  That was a hard lesson I learned when I got sick.

2012-06-25 16.32.15

Visiting the Ocean two years where we spent a good portion of our day chasing each other running up and down the coast.

To give you an example of how much calories you can possibly lose by engaging with your children, I used myself as the example below.

  • play tag- 78-200 depending on weight & duration
  • hopscotch- 104 to 222 calories depending on weight & duration
  • running around playing tag238-327 for 1 hour depending on weight
  • hiking400-526 depending on duration & weight
  • walking– 148-204 depending on weight & speed for 1 hour ( I used slow speed as the example)
  • swimming- 400 calories in 30 minutes
information taken from: Nutri Strategy & Modern Mom

As a bonus I’m adding a helpful chart I found that breaks down some household duties & calories lost:
Chart was taken from: Popsugar

Activity Calories Burned
Running after/playing with kids (20 min.) 78
Playing outdoor games like hopscotch or dodgeball (30 min.) 104
Carrying your infant on a walk (30 min.) 109
Walking while pushing a stroller (30 min.) 78
Picking up toys (10 min.) 29
Vacuuming up the plant, food, sand or whatever else your toddler dumped over (10 min.) 29
Mopping up milk, maple syrup, and other spills (10 min.) 44
Washing dishes (10 min.) 22
Sleeping while they nap (45 min.) 41
Putting away groceries (10 min.) 26
Dance party to The Wiggles in the living room (15 min.) 88
Reading stories before bed (10 min.) 10

Aren’t the numbers crazy?  Who needs a gym when you have kids and household duties to attend to?  If you put your mind to it and stay as busy as possible during your days, you can burn through a lot of calories.  Add that to a healthy diet and you have a great way to lose those extra pounds, all while having fun with your children.
What is your favorite way to exercise?  Why?

Wordless Wednesday

Hope everyone had a great mother’s day.  My children spoiled me this year with homemade goodies, cards, & gifts.  Then my oldest surprised me with a special trip out.  This is the 1st year my son had a job and wanted to do something nice for me.  The kids all planned out my day, as a surprise to me.   My oldest son treated the most family out to lunch & ice cream at his work, which is no small feat with 6 people, especially for a 16 year old.  Then dinner was made by the rest of the kids & hubby when he got home from work.  It was such a nice day, even if the kids didn’t last all day without arguing with one another.  Now on the our party.
Please join us each Wednesday for a chance to share your posts (new or old), meet new bloggers & view new sites, to see all the great content that’s out there, or to visit your favorite blogs to see what they’ve been up too.  The more you participate, the better our Wordless Wednesday party will be.

2015 A To Z Challenge in April

For the month of April, this blog will be taking part in a challenge, so my posting schedule will be a little different because I am participating in the A to Z blogging challenge.  Have you heard of this?  It’s where you are challenged to write everyday in the month of April starting with the 1st and using the letter A for a post.  I read this and thought what a great way to do more with your blog, have fun, meet new bloggers, & dig a little deeper into your blogging theme.  For me, I will be exploring living simple world……..It’ll be  simple living A to Z.
If you are interested in doing your own A to Z challenge here is some information about this challenge:

“To provide an example:  My “A” topic in the first year’s challenge was a debate using April Fool’s Day.   In 2011 my “B” topic was Blog Boggled–a regular feature on my blog.    For the letter “C” one could use candy or cake and post a recipe.    D could inspire a post about the letter grade”D” as you might receive on a test in school.   Maybe F could be represented by FE, the symbol for iron.
Try to be inventive and surprise us.  Hopefully your posts will be at least 100 words to show that you really put some kind of effort into your post.   Creativity can certainly come in less than 100 words. In 2011 Doris Plaster wrote a series of 50 word stories that eventually she published in book form.  If all you do normally is post a quote or something short, then keep it in the alphabet theme.  Don’t worry about your blog’s subject matter– this will work for absolutely any blog.  If you only post about food or animals or crafts or whatever, you can come up with alphabetized themes. ” taken from A to Z Challenge.com.

To join in on the fun, click here to join the 1300+ bloggers already signed up.  If you are joining in, please let me a comment below to let me know, so I can follow your challenge.  🙂
Will you join me with this challenge?

Having Fun With St. Patrick’s Day

I’m Irish, the percentage I’m not quite sure.   It’s something like 40, 60, or 80%.  But mentally, I’m 99.9% Irish.  I love everything from their culture to their food, to their beautiful castles & landscapes and so on.
With every St. Patrick’s day, we do a few simple things as our way of celebrating it.  My 3 older ones didn’t participate since they said they are too old for it (in my opinion you’re never to old to have fun) so it was just the two little ones & I having all the fun.  To keep with the spirit of fun, I’m letting the images tell you our day’s story.  Oh and don’t worry, our boiled dinner is cooking while we had our fun.  And we even had a 5 min hail storm to boot. 🙂
